SAP CO (Controlling) supports internal management accounting. While FI answers “what did we post?”, CO answers “where did costs arise, what did our products cost, and which segments are profitable?”
CO tracks costs on cost centres, internal orders and projects, calculates standard and actual product costs, allocates overheads, and analyses profitability by customer, product, region or channel.
In S/4HANA, cost elements are G/L accounts, CO and FI share the Universal Journal, and Margin Analysis (account-based profitability) is the recommended approach instead of costing-based CO-PA. Material Ledger and actual costing are standard for valuation.
